Attributes of Memorable Gastro-Tourists’ Experiences

Gastro-tourists are a distinct group who travel specifically to immerse themselves in new cultures through memorable culinary experiences. This study employed a triangulation method combining data from three sources and two collection techniques: in-depth interviews and online surveys.


The study identified seven attributes that contribute to the memorability of gastro-tourism experiences:


1. Deliberate and incidental gastro-tourists: Both intentional and spontaneous travelers seeking culinary adventures.

2. Travel stages: Different phases of travel influence gastronomic exploration and enjoyment.

3. Foodie risk-taking: Willingness to explore unfamiliar or adventurous food choices.

4. Interdependent co-created tourist-host relationships: Collaborative interactions between tourists and local hosts in shaping experiences.

5. Authenticity: Genuine and culturally immersive food experiences.

6. Sociability: Enjoyment of social interactions and communal dining experiences.

7. Emotions Emotional connections and memories associated with food experiences.


These attributes highlight a shift towards experiential and co-created tourism models, moving beyond traditional product and service-oriented approaches. They underscore the motivations driving the burgeoning gastro-tourism market, emphasizing the significance of memorable moments that resonate with gastro-tourists.


Understanding these triggering moments not only enriches our understanding of sustainable tourism development but also informs strategies for destination branding, co-creation initiatives, and stakeholder engagement in the tourism industry.
